Portwrinkle Beach

Two beaches with good surfing...

Two beaches. Good surfing to the east on the sandy ‘Finnygook’ beach following big swells. The westerly beach is shingly. Steep paths down, but still popular with families. Fantastic rockpools for the kids to discover. Generally tranquil and unspoilt. Rocks can be well concealed at high tide. Bathe with caution. No lifeguard service.

A memory of Portwrinkle: ‘My parents used to take me there after school sometimes on their half day off from Menheniot Co-Op in the 1950s and early 1960s when I was a child. It was a steep climb down to the beach from the road but worth the effort. Once a wave came in and washed our things into the sea and people scrambled to retrieve them, after that my parents always sat on the grassy bank!’ Noreen Keenleyside
